Don’t put yourself, your family and your pet at risk. You are responsible for planning for your pet. If you are ordered to evacuate, take your Pet Survival Kid if you go to friends, relatives or a hotel. Unless there are pet-friendly shelter in your county, shelters cannot accept pets. If you plan to go to a hotel or motel, go online to www.petswelcome.com.Pet Disaster Supply Kit Keep items in an accessible place and store then in sturdy containers that can be carried easily (duffel bag, backpack, etc.) Your pet disaster supplies kit should include: •Proper ID collar and rabies tag/license•Vaccination/Medical records (stored in a waterproof container)•Any necessary medications•Carriers or cage to transport pets. (Large enough for your pet to move around in) •Leashes, harnesses •Dry/wet food (enough for at least two weeks)•Potable water, depending on the size of the animal use similar guidelines as for humans. •Food and water bowls•Current photo of your pet. •Specific care instructions and proof of ownership•Proper ID on all belongings•Newspapers, cat little, scoop, plastic trash bags for handling waste•Pet beds, toys and comfort items, if easily transportable.•A non-electric can openerMany companies sell pre-assembled pet emergency kits, but you put together your own kit starting with the supplies listed above. Either way, have a plan, be prepared, be safe. Red Cross shelters cannot admit persons with pets, so plan ahead. Determine your options of where to leave your pet: 1) Boarding kennels 2) Friends or relatives who can provide temporary care inside their home. 3) Motels that allow pets (check on any restrictions concerning pets). 4) You should have essential supplies on hand for your pet whether you are away from home for a day or a week.Note: Some kennels have certain requirements for boarding your pet. Please familiarize yourself with these and make arrangements accordingly. There is no longer a pet evacuation shelter provided during weather emergencies. This makes it even more important to plan ahead for the safety of your pet. Locate the important telephone numbers in your area.After the storm has passed, be careful in allowing your pet outdoors. Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and your pet could easily be confused and become lost. Downer power lines, other animals and insects brought in with the high water could present real dangers to your pet. Take care not allow your pet to consume food or water which may have become contaminated. Nearly 80% of pets displaced by a storm are never reunited with their owners.
